In Rhode Island the primary hunting seasons typically run from the second Saturday in September to the last day of February and from the third Saturday in April to the last day in May, however this can vary from year to year and depends on what game is being hunted. During hunting season you should wear at least 200 square inches (a hat OR a vest) of blaze orange. During shotgun deer season, which is typically in December, you should wear at least 500 square inches of blaze orange (a hat AND a vest). For more information see the RI DEM website.

Ballard Park is 13-acre historic park on the site of a former quarry used as a source for the rock used to build the Newport mansions. It has 1.25 miles of trails that including bog bridges, boardwalks, grassy meadows, and rocky steeper areas. The trails meander along the ridges of the quarry with spectacular views to a meadow below and into the distance. Hikers with small children should be careful along some of the ridge viewpoints. At the start of spring, thousands of daffodils in bloom in the meadow. The park is excellent for birding and is popular with locals for dog-walking.
