In Rhode Island the primary hunting seasons typically run from the second Saturday in September to the last day of February and from the third Saturday in April to the last day in May, however this can vary from year to year and depends on what game is being hunted. During hunting season you should wear at least 200 square inches (a hat OR a vest) of blaze orange. During shotgun deer season, which is typically in December, you should wear at least 500 square inches of blaze orange (a hat AND a vest). For more information see the RI DEM website.

What’s There:

The two trails at the Spencer West Property in Foster make for a nice short hike around a pond or a longer hike through rocky terrain and mountain laurel. Beginning the trail at the steel access gate, at Pole 36 on Paine Rd, walkers will enjoy the smooth terrain of the combination trail and access road. For a half-mile loop passing by the pond, follow the trail to a fork where blue blazes to the right will continue on the access road and eventually to the pond. Be sure to stay right at the next fork, as well. The blazes will turn white again as the trail approaches the pond and sharply turns right to traverse along the north edge of the water. Follow this trail back to the access road to complete the Deer Pond Loop Trail. For a longer hike, stay left at the first fork to take the 1 mile Laurel Loop Trail around the back of the property. Meet back up with the Deer Pond Loop Trail at the access road portion.

Please note, water activities are not allowed in the pond.
