In Rhode Island the primary hunting seasons typically run from the second Saturday in September to the last day of February and from the third Saturday in April to the last day in May, however this can vary from year to year and depends on what game is being hunted. During hunting season you should wear at least 200 square inches (a hat OR a vest) of blaze orange. During shotgun deer season, which is typically in December, you should wear at least 500 square inches of blaze orange (a hat AND a vest). For more information see the RI DEM website.
The Maurie Dunbar Preserve is a 17+ acre property in western Foster near the state line. While the single trail there is not particularly long, visitors will enjoy the serenity of a short walk in the woods around the Gorham Farm Pond. From the parking lot along Cucumber Hill Road, the trail follows a causeway across the southeastern edge of the pond. Sit here to observe visiting ducks and geese or launch your canoe or kayak for a paddle around the pond. From the causeway, an unblazed trail leads walkers around the southern end of Gorham Farm Pond to additional fishing areas where one might catch largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, perch, pickerel, and catfish. When you come to the end of the trail or the no trespassing sign please turn around and return the way you came.
